Amsterdam Dance Event is the biggest electronic music gathering in the world, and it does not work like a summer festival. It runs 21 to 25 October 2026, and instead of one field with one stage, it takes over the whole city: more than 200 venues, over 1,000 events, thousands of artists, and roughly 400,000 people moving between clubs, warehouses, boat parties, museums and daytime conference halls. That is the thing to understand before you pack. You are not dressing for a stage and a picnic blanket. You are dressing for cold, wet streets and a hot, packed room, over and over, for five days. This guide is the short version of what actually works, plus twelve pieces we make that suit the week. Programme, passes and venues are on the official ADE site.

Why a hoodie beats a jacket
Do the cloakroom math. A club charges you a few euros to check a coat. You are hitting three or four venues a night for five nights. That is a real stack of cash and, worse, a real stack of queuing, because the cloakroom line at 2am is not short and it is not fast. Every time you check a coat you also commit to coming back to that exact venue to get it, which kills the whole point of a week built on wandering.
A hoodie solves this. On the street it keeps you warm. In the queue it keeps you warm. On the bike it keeps you warm. Then you walk into a 30-degree room and it comes off in one motion and ties around your waist, and you have checked nothing, paid nothing, and you can leave the second the set drops off. A jacket cannot do that. A good coat is a liability at a five-day club festival. A heavyweight hoodie is the tool for the job, and it is the one piece that solves the cold-outside, hot-inside problem without you having to think about it again.
Daytime vs night: two different events
People forget the days. Amsterdam Dance Event is not only clubs. There is a full conference: panels, label showcases, workshops, networking, all of it in the daytime in normal buildings with normal lighting and people you might actually want to remember you. If your plan is industry by day and dancefloor by night, you are dressing for two audiences.
The daytime version is smart-casual by rave standards. A clean crewneck or a well-fitting sweatshirt over a tee reads as put-together in a panel room and still keeps you warm walking between sessions. The night version is pure function: something you can sweat in, something you don’t mind spilling a drink on, something that survives a warehouse floor. The trick is picking pieces that carry across both without a hotel-room outfit change, because you will not have time to go back and change. A neutral heavyweight hoodie and a decent pair of trainers pass in a conference hall at 3pm and a basement at 3am. That crossover is what you are actually shopping for.
The 200-venue problem: dress for the walk
Here is the number nobody warns you about: you will walk 15,000 steps a night, easily more, and you will do it for five nights straight. The event is spread across the entire city. Two venues that both sound great can be a 25-minute walk or a full tram ride apart, and you will make that trip several times a night, often in the rain, often a bit worse for wear.
This is a footwear decision before it is anything else. Wear trainers that are already broken in and that you genuinely do not care about, because they are going to get soaked, stepped on, and covered in whatever is on a warehouse floor at 4am. New white sneakers will be destroyed by Thursday and you will spend the week protecting them instead of enjoying yourself. The same logic runs up through the rest of the outfit: comfort and durability beat looks, because the outfit that photographs best at 9pm is not the one that gets you happily to 6am. Dress like you are going on a five-night walking tour that happens to have techno at every stop, because that is exactly what this is.
Rain, bikes and canals: weight matters
Amsterdam in late October is wet and it is windy, and the wind comes straight off the water. A thin fashion hoodie soaks through in a light drizzle and then you are carrying cold, damp cotton around for the rest of the night. This is where fabric weight stops being a spec sheet detail and becomes the difference between a good night and a miserable one.
Go heavy. A heavyweight hoodie holds its shape, holds some heat even when it is damp, and shrugs off the kind of light rain you will spend a lot of the week walking and cycling through. If the forecast is genuinely bad, a packable shell over the top handles it without you having to check a coat, and it stuffs into a pocket the moment the rain stops. If you are cycling, and a lot of people do, a heavier fabric also cuts the wind on a canal bridge at midnight far better than anything lightweight. You do not need technical outerwear for this. You need one honestly heavyweight hoodie that can take being rained on and keep working.
What not to wear
Fresh white sneakers, first of all. They will not survive and you will hate babysitting them. Anything you would be genuinely upset to lose or ruin, because things get lost, spilled on and rained on across a five-day week, so leave the nice watch and the special jacket at home. Statement outerwear you will pay to check every single night falls in the same bin: a beautiful long coat sounds great until you have handed over twenty euros in cloakroom fees by Saturday and spent an hour of your festival in coat-check queues.
Skip anything stiff or restrictive too. You are going to be on your feet, on the move and packed into hot rooms for hours, and clothes that look sharp standing still get unbearable fast when you are actually dancing in them. The whole game is dressing so you never have to think about what you are wearing again once you leave the house. Get that right and you free up all your attention for the only thing that matters here, which is the music.

Getting around during the week
The city is the venue, so how you move between rooms shapes your whole night. Central Amsterdam is genuinely walkable and a lot of clubs cluster close enough that walking is the honest answer, which is again why your shoes matter more than anything else you pack. For longer hops, a rental bike is the local move: it is fast, it is cheap, and it turns a 25-minute cold walk into a five-minute ride, though it does mean dressing for wind and remembering that Amsterdam cyclists do not slow down for anyone. Night trams and night buses cover the gaps once the regular network stops, so it is worth screenshotting the routes before your phone dies at 3am.
One practical tip that ties back to the clothes: travel light between venues so you actually can walk or cycle without a coat to wrestle. Keep a cloakroom to the one venue where you will genuinely settle in for a few hours, and stay mobile everywhere else with a hoodie you carry on your own body. It is the difference between a fluid night and one spent standing in coat-check lines.
