What to Wear to a Work Christmas Party, Men

The work Christmas party is the one night of the year you get dressed in front of people who only ever see you in your normal clothes. That is the entire problem. Too casual and you look like you could not be bothered. Too sharp and everyone notices you tried, which is somehow worse.

The answer sits in a narrow band, and it is easier to hit than people think. Here is what works, what the actual rules are on a printed shirt in front of colleagues, and the one thing almost everyone gets wrong.

The short version

  • Dress one notch above your normal office clothes. One notch, not three.
  • A dark patterned shirt under a plain jacket is the safest interesting thing you can wear.
  • Yes you can wear a print. Dark ground, dense pattern, no slogans and nothing readable.
  • Venues run hot once the room fills, so plan to lose the jacket by 9pm and still look fine.
  • Whatever you wear, you will see these people again on Monday. That is the whole filter.
  • Save the loudest thing you own for New Year’s Eve.

The one rule: one notch above your normal office clothes

Whatever you wear to work on a normal Tuesday, go one step up from that. If you wear a t-shirt and jeans, wear a good dark shirt and dark jeans. If you already wear a shirt, add a jacket. That is it.

The reason this works is that everyone is calibrating against the version of you they already know. One notch reads as effort. Three notches reads as a costume, and in a room of colleagues it invites comment you probably do not want. The goal is for someone to think you look good, not to think about what you are wearing at all.

Can you wear a graphic tee to a work Christmas party?

Yes, with two conditions. The pattern needs a dark ground rather than a bright one, and there must be nothing readable on it. No words, no slogans, no logos, no faces. A dense abstract or botanical print reads as a shirt with a pattern. A slogan tee reads as a slogan.

The test is whether anyone could quote your shirt back to you. If not, you are fine.

The structural trick is a plain dark jacket over the top. You walk in looking smart, the print shows at the neck and the forearms, and when the room heats up and the jacket comes off you are wearing something more interesting than everyone else rather than less. A plain shirt does the opposite: it peaks when you arrive and gets duller all night.

Dark ground, dense pattern, nothing readable. These are the ones that work under a jacket and still stand on their own when it comes off.

Read the venue before you read the invitation

The invitation will say something vague like festive or smart casual, which tells you nothing. The venue tells you everything. A private dining room is a different night to a pub function room, which is a different night again to a rooftop bar or a hotel ballroom.

A rooftop or hotel venue carries more pattern than a pub function room does.
Venue What it means What to wear Jacket?
Pub function room Loud, standing, spilled drinks Dark patterned shirt, dark jeans, boots or clean trainers Optional, probably not
Private dining room Seated, you will talk to your boss Patterned shirt under a plain jacket, chinos or dark trousers Yes, on arrival
Rooftop or hotel bar Dressier, colder than you expect The most interesting print you own, plus a real jacket Yes, and keep it
Ballroom or awards night Dress code is actually enforced Follow the stated code, pattern only at the shirt Yes, non-negotiable
Afternoon in the office Nobody is really dressed up One notch up from Tuesday and nothing more No
General guidance. If the invitation names a dress code, the dress code wins.

Plan for the room getting hot

Every Christmas party venue is 15 degrees warmer by 9pm than it was at 7. A packed function room with a few hundred people in it runs well into the mid twenties regardless of what December is doing outside.

This is why the layer underneath matters more than the layer on top. Whatever is left when the jacket comes off is what you are actually wearing for most of the night, and for most men that turns out to be a plain shirt they chose without thinking about it. Choose that piece first and the jacket second.

If your office is more relaxed

Some workplaces genuinely do not care, and if yours is one of them the band gets wider. You can go brighter, you can skip the jacket, and a bold print becomes an asset rather than a risk. The rule that still holds: nothing readable, and nothing you would be embarrassed to be photographed in, because you will be photographed.

If your office is more relaxed

Brighter, bolder, and no jacket required. Still nothing with words on it.

What not to wear

The Christmas jumper, unless it is explicitly a Christmas jumper night. Wearing one uninvited is a bid for attention and the room can tell.

Anything with a slogan, a joke or a readable word. It will be quoted back at you, probably in a meeting, probably in March.

A brand new outfit you have never worn. A work party is four or five hours of standing and talking, and an untested collar or a stiff pair of shoes will occupy your whole evening.

Dark botanical prints are the quiet end of interesting. They read as a shirt, not a statement.

Anything white or pale. Red wine, buffet food, a crowded room. You know how this ends.

And shorts, sportswear or anything you would wear to the gym, however relaxed the office claims to be. There is relaxed and there is having not read the room.

First Christmas party at a new job?

Underdress slightly rather than overdress. You can always take a jacket off, and nobody has ever been judged for being marginally too plain at their first one. The person who turns up in the loudest outfit in the room on their first December is a story people tell.

December outside, so whatever you wore has to survive the walk to the station too.

Ask one person who went last year what it was actually like. Two minutes of intelligence beats an hour of guessing, and the answer is usually that it is far more casual than the invitation implied.

FAQ

What should a man wear to a work Christmas party?

One notch above your normal office clothes. For most men that is a dark patterned shirt with dark jeans or trousers, and a plain jacket you can take off when the room heats up. The pattern gives you something interesting to wear without needing a formal outfit, and the jacket lets you arrive looking sharper than you will be dressed by 10pm.

Can you wear a graphic tee to a work Christmas party?

Yes, if the print has a dark ground and nothing readable on it. A dense abstract, geometric or botanical pattern reads as a shirt with a pattern. Anything with words, a slogan, a logo or a face reads as a slogan tee and will get quoted back at you. Put a plain jacket over it and it works in almost any venue short of a formal ballroom.

Is smart casual the same as what I wear to the office?

No, and this is where most people go wrong in both directions. Smart casual at a Christmas party means one visible step above your normal work clothes, not your work clothes and not a suit. If you wear a t-shirt to work, it means a proper shirt. If you already wear a shirt, it means adding a jacket.

How warm do Christmas party venues get?

Much warmer than you plan for. A packed function room runs into the mid twenties by mid-evening regardless of the weather outside, which is why you should choose the layer under the jacket first. That is the piece you will actually be wearing for most of the night.

Should I wear a Christmas jumper?

Only if it has been explicitly stated as a Christmas jumper night, or you know for certain that several other people are wearing one. Turning up in one uninvited reads as a bid for attention. If in doubt, ask someone who went last year rather than guessing.

What should I not wear to a work Christmas party?

Anything with a readable slogan, anything white or pale, a brand new untested outfit, sportswear, and an uninvited Christmas jumper. The filter that covers all of it: you will see these people again on Monday morning.
